I offer two courses:
The Art of Furniture Joinery and Construction, I and II.
Using hand tools exclusively, the first course focuses on sharpening, basic joinery (mortise and tenon and dovetail joints), hand milling (squaring a board from rough stock), drafting and design proportion, and concludes with the construction of a modest piece of furniture totally by hand. After successfully completing the first course, the student may continue on to the second course. Course II is structured as a tutorial, where the student and I decide upon an appropriate piece to be built. The objective is to increase the skill level of the student, by expanding upon what was learned in the first course.
Each person is interviewed to:
The first course meets every Saturday morning from 9 to 12 for 12 weeks. The schedule of the second course is more flexible and mutually agreed upon by the student and myself. Both course are offered starting in October and January at a cost of $450. The students are encouraged to provide their own tools.
My overall objective for these two courses is to teach a basic understanding of hand tools as they relate to furniture making, while encouraging the student to be less dependent on power tools.
Call or e-mail to sign up. It's fun and you will enjoy it!
